A (Sun)Day in the Life of My Phone

By admin - Posted on 22 November 2010

I admit, I was excited about the MyTouch 4G. So excited, in fact, that I bought it on launch day. Until yesterday, though, I really hadn't put it through the paces and seen just how long it would live through what always ends up being my busiest day - Sunday. Here are the chronicles of the day and how my phone performed.

The day started at 6:30am when the phone started buzzing and ringing trying to tell me to get up. I snoozed it. Twice. Finally, I rolled out of bed, unplugged the thing, noticed some notifications about emails, buzz, etc., and headed off to get ready for the day. By 7:15 I was ready to roll, so I decided to actually read my emails, Twitter updates, Facebook news, and any articles that had caught my attention from Twitter. A few minutes later we were off to church.

My phone stayed in my pocket for the better part of the next couple hours. After church I pulled it out and caught up again, exchanged numbers with a friend, and read some more articles. We took off to Barnes and Noble to kill the afternoon until the evening service. That's where I really drained some juice.

Even though I was surrounded by books, not a few of which I was interested in, I found myself constantly pulling out my phone to... well, to just check stuff, I guess. The truth is there was a severe lack of seating, and I didn't want to stand and read, so I mostly just browsed around. We stayed at Barnes and Noble for a few hours, and finally left around 4:45 to head back to church. At this point, my old Nexus One would have been showing yellow in the battery icon, I think. My MyTouch 4G was still showing green, albeit barely. I went ahead and turned it off anyway during the evening service, because I wasn't sure what the rest of the night would entail.

After church I once again pulled out my trusty sidekick (no, not that kind) and turned it back on. After catching up on stuff yet again, a bunch of us decided to go out for dinner. At this point my phone was definitely in the orange, and I figured I had about 30-45 minutes of normal use. I sent a couple texts here and there and then off we went to dinner. I did have to fire up Google Maps because I wasn't 100% sure where the place was we were going to.

Once we got there I didn't use my phone at all, so it just stayed in my pocket for a couple more hours. Once we finally got home around 10:30pm, I took it out to check feeds and stuff one last time before putting it to bed. It was nearing the end of it's capacity, but it completed it's task well enough. I plugged it in and I swear I heard it sigh with relief. It had truly been a long day for both of us.

So there you go. Unplugged at 7:00am, went strong all day, plugged back in at about 10:30 at night. That's a good 15 1/2 hours of "normal" usage (whatever that means). Overall I'm quite impressed. My Nexus would probably have shut down after about 10 or 12 hours, so I'm quite happy with the performance from the MyTouch 4G's battery.
